Man Refused Bail: Previous Convictions, Pending Cases

An accused in his 20s was refused bail by the High Court in Suva on Tuesday.

Ledua Tikotani appeared before judge Justice Riyaz Hamza charged with one count each of aggravated burglary and theft.

Justice Hamza told the court that the reasons for refusing bail for the accused was because he had previous convictions and pending cases before the Suva Magistrates Court.

He also told the court that the charges of aggravated burglary and theft are serious offences.

“The offences are indictable offences that are happening around the communities.

“The court feels that the granting of the bail will gain public interest and make the protection of the community more difficult,” Justice Hamza said.

He also noted that the accused had been in remand since February 16, 2018 and had his first bail application refused by the High Court previously in May.

Bail was not granted for Tikotani and he was further remanded in custody.

The matter was adjourned for pre-trial conference on October 3.
