Team Fiji sought traditional blessing (itatau)  from President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at Borron House yesterday.

The team will depart for Buenos Aires, Argentina next week.

President Konrote congratulated the three athletes, Grace Yee (table tennis), Chang Hon Kim (badminton) and Serenia Ragatu (athletics).

“You now go as a team and not as individuals.  You carry the reputation of our nation on your shoulder,” he said.

“As young athletes you represent the core of elite sportsmen and women setting a benchmark for sporting excellence.

“As ambassadors of the country, you will compete against other countries and I urge each of you to practice good sportsmanship.”

President Konrote acknowledged the hardworking officials behind the scene that who helped these young athletes qualify.

Chef de Mission Tomasi Tiko said Team Fiji aimed at getting exposure and building personal development.

“This is a journey where we want them to gain exposure and compete to their best they can as well as work towards some targets,” Tiko said.

“Out of the three, Yee is the highest ranked having competed in international competitions. But all of the athletes will want to achieve their best as well.”
