By the end of this week, 7,303 Fijians in the Northern Division will benefit from Government’s $1,000 Micro and Small Business Grant.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya while handing out cheques to the 1,645 recipients at Nabouwalu in Bua, yesterday.

Mr Koya said Government had achieved another milestone as it had doubled their initial commitment to the people of Nabouwalu and Bua.

He said the micro and small business sector was a nursery for entrepreneurship and a school for innovation.

“Last year, we distributed grants to 699 recipients here in Nabouwalu and today (yesterday), a total of 1645 people will be receiving their grant,” he said.

“This brings the total number of entrepreneurs assisted in Nabouwalu thus far to 2334 supporting and making a difference in their lives of 11,720 Fijians.

“Last Friday, I distributed grants in Taveuni, on Monday in Savusavu and another disbursement is planned for the people of Seaqaqa tomorrow (today).

“The Micro and Small Business Grant sector is crucial success of the national agenda of Financial Inclusion.”

“And your Government is keen to involve everyone and ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.

He said the Fiji Development Bank had been involved to ensure that recipients use the grant to grow their business and not for their own benefits.

“We have involved the Fiji Development Bank for a special reason; you are now part of the bank process.”

“So that when your business grows bigger and you want further financial support to grow your business you can go to the FDB and they will advise you.

“And they already know who you are and that the Government gave you its tick of approval.

“To all the recipients, please remember that this is not a hand out. You just can’t take the money and spend it on anything you like, it’s a leg up and a very important one.”

He said micro and small business entrepreneurs were counted as the key contributor to the Fijian economy.

“Therefore we giving you the ability to help yourself and your families, we are putting our confidence and trust in you to use this assistance well,” he said.

“Because we see you as part of our national effort to promote a business culture in Fiji, to create a solid base of small business, who can be the backbone of our economy, just as the medium and small business sector is the backbone of every successful modern nation.”

Mr Koya will be handing out grants at Seaqaqa in Vanua Levu today.
