Mereseini Vuniwaqa said Fiji was lucky to have friends like the Government of the People’s Republic of China that supported and helped Fiji in many ways.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation was speaking during the Chinese Moon Festival and National Day of China celebration in Suva at the China Cultural Centre yesterday.

The celebration also marked the opening of the Cultural Week of Inner Mongolia.

It included performances by the Ulaanmuqir Troupe, a delegation of singers, dancers and folk music performers from Inner Mongolia who will display
handicraft skills and perform at various venues in Suva.

“It is with celebrations like these that connections to our roots are strengthened,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.

“Traditional celebrations are also an
excellent opportunity for intercultural
exchange and understanding.

“Such celebrations are extremely
crucial as they define the core of our cultural identity.”

The Moon Festival also known as the ‘Mid-Autumn Festival’ is celebrated primarily for family reunions. It can also be a great occasion for poetry, singing, dancing and interaction.

The Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Qian Bo, said: “The China-Fiji relations have developed quite steadily in recent years and country exchanges have played an important part.”

Ambassador Qian remains confident that cultural exchanges and co-operation between the two countries will bear more fruits in years to come.

“China is willing to work together with Fiji to connect our development strategies and to build a community with a shared future for the mankind,” Mr Qian said.
