A cane fire yesterday spread to a nearby sandalwood and fruit nursery farm causing damage estimated to be around $51, 000.

The incident happened at the Pacific Harvest Ltd farm at Naisoso, Nadi, at around 10am.

Pacific Harvest Ltd managing director Rizwan Khan said this was the third time the farm caught fire on their 28-acre piece of land.

“We have had sandalwood as the main thing that we funded here. The last time we had a fire we had divided the land into four parts,” he said.

He said his land number four was completely destroyed, but land number three was partly damaged.

“Four is a total right-off and part of three was damaged, which was the USP research field where we were researching produce such as papaya for better fruiting.

“We called the fire brigade, they were very responsive and they came straight away,” he said.

Mr Khan said they lost about 1000 sandalwood trees that was set last July. He said the company would now begin planning for the nursery again.

The National Fire Authority last night confirmed that investigations into the fire were currently underway.
