The National Fire Authority managed to contain a residential fire in Colasi Settlement in Tavua following firefighters’ swift response.

Jalsur Naicker, 56, home owner, said that he was very happy that his house was saved.

“I’m very happy that NFA managed to contain the fire,” said Mr Naicker.

Mr Naicker said that the fire started at around 10am on Thursday and claimed it started from the bulk storage.

“My wife was washing clothes when she saw smoke coming out of our bulk house,” he said.

Mr Naicker said that he immediately rushed to the bulk where he saw the smoke billowing at a fast rate.

“I rushed to the tap but the pressure was very low,” he said.

“The villagers were also very helpful in moving the stuff.”

He said that the bulk included all his electrical and mechanical appliances such as chainsaw, brush cutter, electric drill, router and other machines.

He said that the expected cost of damage was around $10,000. Firefighters, he said arrived about 20 minutes after they made an emergency call.

During the time of the incident, he was at home with his wife and his grandson while his two sons were at work.
