The conservation of ocean and marine resources was the focus of a gathering at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau, Nadi, yesterday.

At least 30 participants attended the international Symposium hosted by the University of Fiji’s School of Science and Technology.

The sole purpose of the symposium was to focus on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, based on preserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

It also aimed at sustainably managing and protecting the marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution and addressing the impacts of ocean identification.

While speaking at the Symposium yesterday, the University’s acting Vice Chancellor Professor Narendra Reddy said the School of Science and Technology had increased its research output over the past few years.

Since then, he said, it had participated in national and international training session to enhance the skills needed to undertake ocean-based research.

Meanwhile, Head of the Science Department at the University, Dr Ajay Singh, said the symposium would become a platform to discuss and collaborate about marine special planning in Fiji.
