Roger Qoro was the toast of the Ravoravo rugby side when he kicked over their winning penalty as they edged out Airport 17-14 in the Nadi Rugby Union’s premier final at Prince Charles Park, last night.

Pressure rugby saw Airport buckle as they were penalised in the dying moments of the game and Qoro who played at first five eight made no mistake with the conversion.

Ravoravo played with 14-men after Inia Toka was sin-binned for unprofessional play. However, it was former Fijian 7s star William Ryder who registered the first points with a penalty as Airport led 3-0.

But then Apisai Nabou scored the first try for Ravoravo with Qoro adding the extras from the conversion for a 7-3 lead.

Ryder kept Airport on track with his second penalty as they trailed 7-6 at halftime.

Ravoravo started the second half with a bang when Vodafone Fijian Bati rep Vili Rakuli scored their second try and Qoro was successful with the conversion.

With a 14-6 lead it was Ryder who narrowed the deficit to 14-9 with his third penalty.

Airport took control of the game and with their running rugby saw prop Robert Delai scoring their first try with the conversion missing as they levelled the scores at 14-14.

Then Ravoravo took control but a failed attempt for an intercept by Airport’s Jone Turuva saw them being penalised with Qoro’s kicking the winning points.

Ravoravo tireless flanker Sivaniolo Qoro was named the Best Player of the Premier Final.

“Ravoravo is back but Airport gave us a good game,” said captain Waisiki Ramatau.

“The boys did what was wanted of them and that was why we managed to win in the end.”

Ryder was gracious in defeat and said: “There could only be one winner and Ravoravo did that in the last five minutes.”
