A 23-year-old Suva woman was yesterday was jailed for two years eight months by the High Court in Suva after admitting charges of aggravated burglary and theft.

Lusiana Wati appeared before Justice Vinsent Perera and was convicted of the charges. Between December 17 and December 18, 2017, in Suva, Wati with another entered the property of the 48-year-old complainant as trespassers with the intent to commit theft.

Wati with another dishonestly appropriated a 32inch Akita flat screen TV valued at $250, a Panasonic DVD deck valued at $250 and a Panasonic home theatre system worth $250, all to the total value of $750.

While sentencing Wati, Justice Perera said: “You escaped twice while you were in custody for the matter. I am not convinced that your plea of guilty can be regarded as an early guilty plea.

“This conduct of yours reflects lack of remorse and your disrespect towards the justice system.

“Given your conduct of escaping from lawful custody, not once but twice, I consider it inappropriate to suspend your sentence.

“Given the said conduct and your personal circumstances, it will be in your best interest to undergo the rehabilitation programmes conducted by the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services,” Justice Perera said.

Wati was given a non-parole period of one year and two months.

She was given 30 days to appeal against her sentence to the Court of Appeal.
