Close to 3000 people turned up at Shirley Park in Lautoka for the launching of the free Walesi WiFi hotspot zone by Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the ideas behind hotspots being around the country was to bring Fijians to congregate in one place and use the free Wi-Fi.

“We want everybody to be connected, irrespective of how rich or poor you are or no matter where you come from,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum reiterated that Government was working on making all their services available through the internet.

Walesi Wi-Fi hospots were now available in Suva, Savusavu, Nausori, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka with Ba receiving the services next week followed by all other remaining urban centres.

The initiatives were announced in the 2018/19 National Budget.

The Wi-Fi hospots will have free highspeed internet available to users every day for one hour.

Meanwhile, scores of people took the chance to receive the free Walesi set-top box for television which has eight channels.

The channels are available on either television or smart phones.

Jone Matai, of Waiyavi, said he was thankful to the Government for the initiative.

“My wife collected our Walesi box today and is grateful because it is a bit expensive for us to pay for a box,” Mr Matai said.

A slight drizzle during the launching failed to dampen the spirit of the large crowd as they stayed on till the end.

Also present at the launch were some Government Ministers and several candidates selected on Fiji First’s provisional list for the upcoming elections.
