Residents of Lautoka are grateful that they were well prepared during the Water Authority of Fiji’s planned water shutdown.

As repairs are underway for the Nagado Water Treatment Plant, parts of Nadi and the sugar city are without tap water.

However, because of early warning regarding the shutdown, residents were able to store water as well as use the strategically-located water tanks which WAF set up because of this.

Fulori Masira of Kashmir said: “I’m very happy that we are given access to water.”

Ms Masira said that the water stopped around 1am yesterday. She said that the family had already rationed drinking water as well.

“We knew about the shutdown therefore everyone had to prepare for it,” she said.

Waisake Saraqea said that the location of the water tanks had also been key.

“It is very convenient for us to get water now,” he said.

Mr Saraqea said that everyone in his family also understood and followed the principle of conserving water also given the current dry spell felt in parts of the country.

“It is very important that we do not waste any single drop of water,” he said.

Amele Kalera said that the family had already made around 4 trips to the water tank stationed in front of their house.

She urged people not to damage the water tanks made available to the general public.

The Water Authority wishes to advise motorists travelling along roads in the greater Nadi and Lautoka area to be mindful of water carting trucks during the disruption period which began yesterday and expected to continue until October 2.
