Part of Sigatoka Town is under thick black smoke at this hour as firefighters work hard to control a fire that has spread to a number of shopping outlets housed under the same building.

It is understood that the fire started at around 1 pm at a building opposite the Sigatoka bus-stand and is quickly spreading to other nearby outlets.

Firefighters and Police have cordoned off Market Road in Sigatoka town.

Witnesses at the scene said the strong winds from the Sigatoka River was not helping.  Two fire trucks (Korolevu and Sigatoka) are at the scene at the moment.

Max Value Supermarket along Market Road is under threat and firefighters are working hard to contain the fire.

Shops along the Main Street including Dev Chand and Sons have removed all their merchandise and stock from the shop as a precautionary measure.

Movement is limited and drivers are advised to keep away from the town centre.
