Sacrifices of Fiji’s Soldiers, Peacekeepers Remembered

The Poppy flower symbolises courage and commitment and this is an attribute shown by our forefathers when answering the call to arms when called upon at that time.

Acting Minister for the Ministry of Defence and National Security, Jone Usamate made these remarks while speaking at the launching of the 2018 Poppy Appeal at Sukuna Park in Suva yesterday.

“Every year, we commemorate Remembrance Day to honour individuals who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of the peace and freedom we enjoy today,” he said.

Mr Usamate said that the launching of the Poppy Appeal shows our continuous recognition of the gallant sacrifice made by Fiji citizens who served in the armed forces during the World Wars, the Malayan Campaign, Christmas Island operations and the various peacekeeping missions around the globe.

“We have also with us those who served as peacekeepers in various missions that we were mandated to serve in. We still maintain our presence in the Sinai Peninsula, Iraq, Syria and are performing for the sake of international peace and security.”

Retired communication officer, Jitoko Soko said: “We had various difficult experiences because sometimes life is taken away like some of our comrades did not come home.

“When people contribute to the Poppy Appeal it helps the members of families when the breadwinner has passed away in their mission,” he said.
