Local shipping magnate George Goundar is flying to Turkey in two weeks to shop for another vessel to add to the five he has now.

Mr Goundar confirmed this during the Goundar Shipping Limited seventh anniversary on board the first of his five vessels  Lomaiviti Princess  I  at Mua-i-Walu Port in Suva on Monday.

“My future plan is getting more ships in,” Mr Goundar said.

“I am flying up to Turkey the next two weeks to look up for ships in Turkey; now we have got vessels out there we are interested in,” he said.

“I’m hoping by the time we are running out we are getting close to winter season; weathers are not too good as you can see the weather is nasty this year – I don’t take chance for my crew out there.

The number is going to grow from five; now I am looking in a year – it might be eight by the end of next year.”

Mr Goundar had purchased his fifth vessel now called Lomaiviti Princess V for $2.5 million from Canada late last year.

Prior to her arrival home (Lomaiviti Princess V) local crew members were flown to Canada for training.

They then brought the vessel home.

It is likely the same arrangement will be done once the Turkey purchase is confirmed.

Lomaiviti Princess V is the biggest inter-island vessel in Fiji with five-star facilities on board.

Its operation created 55 new jobs for  Fijians in addition to the more than 150 employed on the other four  vessels – Lomaiviti Princess I, II, III and IV.

GSL had its maiden voyage on September 15, 2011 on board Lomaiviti Princess I and has not looked back since.

Mr Goundar bought Lomaiviti Princess I  in  2011, Lomaiviti Princess II in 2013, Lomaiviti Princess III  in 2015, Lomaiviti Princess IV  in 2016 and Lomaiviti Princess  V  last year.
