Around 2000 Police officers will be part of the electoral process next month – providing security at polling stations, guarding ballot boxes and overseeing that the electoral process is being followed.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed this to the Fiji Sun yesterday.

“We are ready and prepared for Election Day,” he said.

Brigadier-General Qiliho added that they have been working with the Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem for many months now and they are prepared.

“We undertook training with them and gone through day-to-day scenarios.”

He said that a standard election procedure booklet was printed and distributed to Police officers that have been trained for their use come election day.

“We are numbering around 2000 officers during election day, that’s apart from those on normal Police routine work.”

Brigadier-General Qiliho said the operation would mean redeployment of officers that were based at the headquarters and redeployment of other units like the Police band.

Meanwhile, Mr Saneem had earlier said they would not hire any private security firm for any security purpose during the election.

“The Fiji Police Force has been provided with adequate budget, training and resources to ensure that they provide election time security and no private security has been involved.”
