US Navy To Strengthen Relations With Fijian Counterparts

The United States Navy is looking forward to strengthen its partnership with the Republic of Fiji Navy, says the USS Shoup (DDG 86) Navy ship commanding officer, Commander Andy Strickland.
The USS Shoup (DDG 86) Navy ship, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with 300 crew, arrived at the Port of Suva yesterday.
The ship is here as part of the Oceania Maritime Security Initiatives (OMSI) deployment.
It leaves tonight for Vanuatu.
Commander Andy Strickland said his senior officers would meet with senior military officers.
“We have an agenda and that is to re-enforce the partnership with Fiji,” he said.
OMSI is a secretary of defence programme aimed at diminishing transnational illegal activity on the high seas in the Pacific Island nations.
This is their first visit to Fiji for the naval ship and its crew.
Commander Strickland said the crew was looking forward to their short stay in Fiji.
“The US Navy maintains a presence in the Indo Asia-Pacific region to help preserve peace and security, and to further partnership with friends and allies like Fiji,” Commander Strickland said
“All countries in this region have experienced economic prosperity largely because of the security and stability that exists at sea.
“Fiji is a key partner in the Western Pacific, and we are here to enjoy this beautiful country. We are also operating in the area with our US costal guard partners conducting OMSI to ensure economic prosperity through security of the high seas and enforcement of marine laws,” he said
Commander Strickland added: “We look forward to more opportunities with the Fiji Navy. We will also be meeting with senior military officers here,” he said.
