Women’s safety
Sonal Sharma,
Suva
I am writing to express my deep concern about the safety of women in our country.
Recently there has been a rapid increase in crimes against women.
As we turn the pages of a newspaper, we come over many headlines such as sexual assaults, rapes, harassments, cybercrime and violence against women. The crime comes in the midst of increased worries about sexual offences in Fiji.
It seems that the criminals no longer fear about the law. They think that they can commit any crime and will escape without punishment easily.
Extreme harsh penalties should be given to those who commit any of these crimes because it will also make others think twice before committing any crimes in the future.
The law should be strong enough that no one can imagine committing such crimes.
There should be equal respect in society for men and women.
The idea that women are weak and cannot do anything needs to be changed.
Standards code

A booklet advising Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints (LDS) Youth (FS 4/10) against vulgarity, violence and pornography should tread carefully because liberty is specified in the Constitution.
Certainly, it can breach liberty of youth to express and, of course, speech. Nevertheless, it’s good moral advice to control youth.
Celebrate Teachers’ Day
Neelz Singh,
Lami
World Teachers Day falls on October 5 and celebrates their contribution toward learning and teaching.
Also known as International Teachers Day it celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education at all levels.
This enables children and adults to learn to take part in contributing to their local community and global society.
A good teacher has greater influence in shaping the life of an individual, even more than his/her parents.
In our country’s culture, a teacher has been given a respected place.
A teacher’s proper guidance and support is very important in achieving one’s goal in life.
Every successful individual always remembers the constructive role played by his/her teacher in their school and college days.
It would be better if Teachers Day remains as a day of teacher-student bonding of learning and respect as it has always been.
I leave you with a quote by Solomon Ortiz: “Education is the key to success in life and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.”
Hats off to all teachers and wishing them Happy Teacher’s Day for their hard work.
Free and fair elections
Sukha Singh,
Labasa
Yes, we have had free and fair elections.
But the elections before 2014 had more free stuff like free grog, free tea and bread and the main thing was free transport to the polling stations.
Hall of Fame

Former Fiji 15s rugby prop Nimilote Ratudina should be inducted into the Rugby Hall of Fame.
There are so many sports figures from the 1800s and 1900s that I propose we separate them into their respective sports Hall of Fame instead of piling them all together.
The late Ratudina only played 15s rugby for Fiji, but now we have Flying Fijians players, Fijian Drua, Fiji Men’s 7s, Fijian 7s, Fijians playing for several top international clubs overseas and Fijians who have played for other countries.
Names such as Rokocoko (All Blacks), Sivivatu (All Blacks), Tuqiri (Wallabies) Radike Samo (Wallabies) come to mind.
Other sports should have their individual Halls of Fame … sports such as athletics, soccer, swimming, boxing, hockey, cricket, golf.
