National Federation Party Leader Biman Prasad says his concerns about the rising price of beer have been misconstrued to mean he supports consumption of alcohol.

“I’m not promoting beer and I would advise people not to consume it,” he said.

Mr Prasad raised this sentiment during a talanoa session at Yalalevu, Ba, yesterday while talking about inflation in Fiji.

He said one such example of inflation and prices was the drastic rise in the price of beer in recent years.

Mr Prasad said a carton of 750ml (millilitres) bottles of beer costs $24.07 after it is processed in the factory.

“The exercise duty of $44 is added to that,” he said.

He said the price eventually increased to an unimaginable extent when it reached retail shops for resale.

“When you finally buy the carton of beer, you pay the difference of the initial $24 and the final $78,” Mr Prasad said.

He said there were items similar to beer on which heavy duties were imposed.

Mr Prasad said one of his main concerns as a politician and an economist was the increase in the prices of goods and services in Fiji.
