Fiji Day celebrations were the order of the day for most schools around the country yesterday and St Anne’s Primary School was no exception. Students, teachers and parents gathered at the school in Suva to commemorate the 48th anniversary of Fiji’s independence.

Headteacher Sister Makarita Vakadranu school said the teachers had been creating awareness for more than a week about Fiji’s history, about the Fiji flag and on the importance of being patriotic.

“I hope we will remain united as Fiji citizens and continue to love one another, take care of each other and be proud of who we are as Fijians,” she said.

Fiji Museum

The importance of knowing Fiji’s history was echoed by the Fiji Museum’s Ratu Jone Balenivalu, who said it was a day to celebrate our past and remember the profound leaders who took our nation forward.

“This is a historical occasion especially for the Fiji Museum because this establishment itself is a depository for tangible historical objects,” he said.
