6 Candidates Disqualified, FLP 3 For Criminal Convictions

The Fijian Elections Office has disqualified six provisional candidates from standing in the upcoming General Elections.

They are:

FijiFirst Party – Naziah Ali, for failing to be in Fiji for the period of 18 months out of the 2 years immediately after the writ was issued.

SODELPA – Adi Narayan, disqualified because of non-confirmation of his status as it appears to be of dual citizenship.

National Federation Party – Feroz Gulam Mohammed, like Ms Ali was out of the country for 222 days.

Fiji Labour Party – 3 were disqualified because of prior criminal convictions

Supervisor of Election Mohammed Saneem held a press conference an hour ago to provide an update on candidate nomination.

  • 4 parties have submitted names
  • 178 candidate nominations were received
  • 172 – approved candidates
  • 6 not approved

Nominations will close tomorrow at midday.

“The Fijian Elections Office will not accept any further nominations after midday and any political party that nominates tomorrow and a decision is not made by midday, they will not be able to replace a candidate if we have not approved any of the nominations that have been filed with us,” Mr Saneem said.

FijiFirst and NFP are expected to file new candidate nomination by tomorrow.
