Saint Thomas High School 2018 Dux Ratu Rakuita Qerewaqa dedicated his achievements to his mother in Syria.

The 18-year-old lad stood proud during the school’s annual prizegiving ceremony at Natabua, Lautoka, on Friday.

Qerewaqa said his mother was a nurse in Syria and it was unfortunate that she could not be home to witness his success.

He said one of the important keys to success was self-confidence.

“One important key of success is self-confidence,” Ratu Rakuita said.

“The journey that I started at the beginning of the year has come to a successful end. This year for me was a very challenging one, especially when I knew it would decide my future.

“After going through so many different hurdles, I realised one thing is to never give up.”

He said his goal was to become an auditor after he finished studies at the University of the South Pacific.

Apart from his dux award, Qerewaqa also attained first place in his class in the term one and two examinations, highest average mark in Mathematics, top scorer for Computer Studies, 92, Accounting 97, Economics, 90, Mathematics, 98 and he was also awarded the highest scorer for the Fiji Year12 Certificate Examination scoring 370 out of 400.
