MIOT Pacific Hospital will conduct cardiac surgery for the first time in Fiji by the end of this year.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by Dr Pradeep Nayar, a qualified cardiologist from Chennai MIOT Hospital in India.

Dr Nayar had a presentation on Management of Coronary Heart Disease during the Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminar at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva yesterday.

“There is a need to have cardiac surgery in Fiji because locals have to go abroad because it is not available in Fiji,” Dr Nayar said. “It is costly to go abroad. Now the locals can save when they do the surgery in Fiji.

“It will open before the end of this year and the surgeons will be from MIOT Hospitals in India.

“I arrived in Fiji on September 16 and I have seen three patients who died from coronary heart disease either from heart attack or heart failure.”

Dr Nayar said the cause of coronary heart disease was food habits and change in lifestyle.

“One must look after their diet and ensure they are healthy,” he said. “One must maintain their body weight and ensure that they are not obese.”

Dr Nayar leaves Fiji for Chennai next week.
