A 39-year-old mother was overjoyed yesterday after her eldest daughter Sweshna Kumar was awarded the dux prize at Korovuto College in Nadi.

Ms Roshni Rohini was a proud mother as she spoke of the sacrifices the family made to keep their children in school, saying it had been worthwhile.

“I am so happy and proud of my daughter. I know all the sacrifices that we’ve made with her have paid off today,” she said.

“Preparing her lunch every morning and supporting her studies. I have two daughters and my husband always supports their school work. We are very happy today.”

Sweshna Kumar, a Year 13 student, was overwhelmed after being awarded the school’s dux prize.

“Today, I feel so excited to be awarded the dux of Korovuto College. I would like to thank my teachers for their support throughout the years. I would like to thank my mum and dad for their support and encouragement,” she said.

“I always aimed to be dux of the school since primary school, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it in my final year at primary School.

“I am so thankful and it was a dream coming true that I was chosen to be the Dux of Korovuto College. I would like to thank my Year 13 colleagues and all those who have supported me and help me to achieve this great award.”

She topped her school in English, Maths, Physics, and Biology.

Kumar is looking forward to becoming a doctor in the future.

Headboy Nivikesh Ram, 18, took out the student of the year and various other awards and acknowledged the support of the hardworking teachers and his parents for always being behind him.

“I want to thank all the teachers of Korovuto College they have been very helpful to me, the students council for their support. I thank my parents for the sacrifice that they have made that made me achieve all my awards. I want to be an IT officer and own a photography business.”
