Narube: We Just Need 26 Candidates To Win The Election
Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube.

Unity Fiji today filed with the Supervisor of Elections the nominations of 31 candidates for the 2018 General Elections. The Leader of Unity Fiji and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji Savenaca Narube said, “We just need 26 candidates to win the elections outright. In fact, under the existing electoral laws, a party can win the elections with less than 26 candidates. Furthermore, under this one national constituency, candidates that miss out on a seat in Parliament can receive more votes than those that win a seat. This election regime is undemocratic and not fair.”

Mr Narube confirmed that the Party had received 55 expressions of interest to join Team Unity in this election. Unfortunately, many had withdrawn due to fears of possible repercussions to their companies, jobs and families. Some withdrew because of the long uncertainty of the election date and for financial reasons.

“I can confirm that there is still a large element of fear and uncertainty in this country,” added Mr Narube.

Although we wanted a better mix of gender and ethnicity, Mr Narube was satisfied with the line-up of Team Unity.

“I believe that we have many things going for this Team Unity. There is the right balance between experience and youth. Our youth candidates make up about 30% of the Team. The youngest candidate is 28 years old. The Team can relate meaningfully with the aspirations of young voters. We have community leaders who are well respected in their communities.

Lastly, we have experienced and skilled professional people who have led the country in the important areas of finance and the economy.”

“The next milestone for us is to publish our manifesto which we aim to do by the end of this week.”

Mr Narube concluded, “The party continues to campaign across Fiji with a clear message that “We will Do Better” because we have the experience and the skills to ease the burden of living of families, raise incomes by taking the development to the people wherever they are, and build a nation through unity, tolerance and good governance.”
