United States Navy Petty Officer Second Class Derek Ellen joined the navy in 2004 and says he has no regrets about it.

The 35-year-old is in Fiji for the first time. He is part of the 320-crew onboard the USS Shoup (DDG 86) Navy ship, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer which berthed at Port of Suva yesterday.

“I joined the US Navy because I love to travel. The only country in the Pacific I have been to is Guam. And Fiji is a totally new country for me,” Petty Officer Ellen said.

“I am looking forward to experience Fiji in the next few days. The only thing I know about Fiji is that ‘FIJI Water’ is from here.”

Another officer, Lieutenant Junior Grade Damage Control Assistant Mikaela Robbins shared similar sentiments.

She is from Nebraska.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Robbins said working in a male-dominated working environment was motivating and interesting.

“I have been in the navy for the past two and a half years. I joined the US Navy because I wanted to serve my country and I grew up in a military background,” Lieutenant Junior Grade Robbins said.

“I was commissioned in 2016 and have no regrets joining the US Navy.

“I don’t know much about Fiji. I was able to know about Fiji through pictures and FIJI Water. I am interested to experience the culture and traditions of Fiji.

“I love interacting with people, especially when visiting a new country. Fijian food is definitely something I am looking forward to.”
