Prohibited fireworks will be confiscated, Finau says

With Diwali on the horizon, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources is advising that any prohibited fireworks, which do not meet approved specifications, will be confiscated by the ministry’s Mineral Resources Department.

According to the Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Malakai Finau, illegal fireworks include spherical or cylindrical shells, firecrackers such as woodpecker, bangers, strikers and aerial wheels, mines and rockets.

“Home-made fireworks as well as bamboo guns are illegal,” said Mr Finau.

He advised that fireworks which are approved for over-the-counter sale, are prescribed in Legal Notice No.45 of 2004- Declaration of Fireworks as Dangerous Goods.

“All fireworks importers are advised of fireworks in the approved list and import applications are strictly vetted by the Mineral Resources Department, including the inspection of fireworks consignment upon arrival into the country.”

Mr Finau also said that the Mineral Resources Department undertakes public awareness in the form of advertisements and talk shows to advise the general public on the safe use of fireworks.

“The department also works in tandem with the National Fire Authority and the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the inspection of fireworks retailing facilities for retailers that are issued with relevant permits for the storage and sale of fireworks,” he said.

Mr Finau people are advised to use fireworks with care since they are explosives. He also advised people to only purchase from accredited sellers, who should have all their up-to-date licences and approvals clearly displayed. He said sellers should also have necessary and safe storage places for firecrackers.

“People should always adhere to labels and instructions for use which are clearly outlined on each fireworks item,” he said.

“Sellers are advised to consult the department for advice on the permits that are needed to store and sell fireworks and also requirements for issuance of these permits,” he said. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
