14 Years, 7-Year Jail Terms For Robbers

Two men charged for aggravated robbery were sentenced by the High Court in Suva yes­terday.

Asesela Niubasaga and Samisoni Waqavatu ap­peared before High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo.

The duo were charged and convicted for one count of aggravated robbery each.

On the day of the incident, the two men with others robbed the complainant in Samabula.

They stole a steel safe val­ued at $1000, $11,000 cash, assorted liquor valued at $1100, assorted jewelleries valued at $15,000, AUD$4000 cash, one couch bag valued at $2000, assorted clothes valued at $300, a Samsung mobile phone valued at $800 and a Suzuki van valued at $8000.

The total value of the complainant’s property is $43,200.

Niubasaga was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 13 years.

Waqavatu was sentenced to seven years imprison­ment without any non-pa­role period.

The duo were given 30 days to appeal to the Court of Appeal.
