DECEMBER END TO SUGARCANE CRUSHING SEASON: FSC

The first half of December has been set as the termination period of the sugarcane crushing season at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) mills.

The Labasa Mill will end crushing on December 6 while a week later on December 13 both the Lautoka and Rarawai mill will cease crushing.

While the dates have been set, it could change depending on the harvesting and crushing progress at all mills.

The late closure could also be an indication by FSC on its earlier statement to crush most if not all sugar cane from the fields.

FSC had advised the Sugar Industry Tribunal, Devanesh Sharma of the tentative closing dates.

Registrar for the Tribunal Timothy Brown said the Tribunal then consulted the Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) in regards to FSC’s advice.

The dates announced were based on the impact of the weather to date and assuming normal mill performances.

The Tribunal would continue to monitor harvesting and crushing at each of the mills before finalising the date for crushing to terminate at each mill.

The final order to terminate crushing at each mill will be given prior to the end of crush for each mill after consulting FSC and SCGC.
