On Wednesday night, Peni Kakua and his family members were roused from their sleep by a sound they thought was thunder.

Mr Kakua said at about 11pm, during heavy rain, there was a loud thundering sound and the ground started to shake.

The family thought it was an earthquake.

“When we woke up in the morning, we witnessed that a large portion of our newly-constructed Nasavu Road had collapsed,” said Mr Kakua.

The road is part of the Sawani Serea Road in Naitasiri.

The 67-year-old farmer originally from Namuka-i-Lau, who has been farming in the area for more than 40 years now, said he and the local villagers saw a road slip for the first time.

“Our road previously collapsed in 2016 during Tropical Cyclone Winston, and then it was reconstructed.

“This has caused a risk for us because we live close by the road and the children usually play near the site, so this is dangerous.”

Close to 200 people live at Nasavu Village and they are finding it difficult to reach their destination in time, especially in bad weather.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority, they closed one lane of the road.

“Motorists are advised to proceed with caution,” the statement read.

Works have begun by Fulton Hogan Hiways, whose workers were seen repairing the collapsed road yesterday. Edited by Epineri Vula
