No company can afford to have their operations 100 per cent digitalisation.

This is what Professor Musharrof Hossain, President of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resources Management,  told the Fiji Human Resources Institute Conference at the Sheraton Fiji Resort yesterday.

He spoke about the issue of the emotional aspect, which was people.

“The issue is related to the customer service which are related to the manual work,” Professor Hossain said.

“Your love and affection with the family can’t be given to the technology. Those should be with you.

“Our argument is that when you do everything that you do, you do not have sufficient time to do the real human resources related to work.

“In fact, we are advocating that you delegate those which you don’t need to do, like repetitively say not contracting a contract for the employees or renewal of a contract.

“I think 60 per cent of our work can be given to digitalisation and 40 per cent can still be done by people because it will alleviate our positions instead of ground level ordinary jobs.

“What we are advocating is that we take the people to the next level so that they can do the innovation.”

On digitisation and the loss of jobs through this technology, Professor Hossain said unemployment will be there if new jobs could not be created.

“New jobs have to be created with new technology, it is both ways.

“If we cannot upgrade ourselves, yes we will be unemployed.

“If we are just filing, and there are no more files, what we are going to do? You’ll lose your jobs.

“If you can raise your competency, learn your technology, new concepts, then there would be no problem,” Professor Hossain said. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
