Two National Fire Authority officers are the first to be part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission to the Golan Heights.

Ifireimi Kubukawa and Aporosa Tagivakatini said they were fortunate to be the first officers representing NFA as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

They are among the 215 Fijian peacekeepers who left on a direct chattered flight to Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel at about 12am today.

“We are happy and fortunate that we will be the first from the Natonal Fire Authority to go on duty,” Mr Tagivakatini said.

“We will do the NFA proud and hopefully our brothers and sisters from NFA can come and join us as well.”

Mr Tagivakatini said it would be unfortunate for him to be away from his family for a year and he wouldn’t be with his wife while she delivers their third child. He hopes that everything goes well.

NFA’s chief executive officer Manasa Lesuma acknowledged the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto for the opportunity.

“We have been working closely with RFMF and it’s an opportunity for our officers to live and learn the military life,” he said.

“Something that we’ve always tried to encourage our officers is to have discipline, In terms of the type of work that they do, it’s essential that we have discipline officers.”

Meanwhile, the NFA officers also undertook trainings and attachment with the RFMF before the mission.
