Land disputes have been the most common issue brought to the Legal Aid Commission office in Labasa.

The commission’s acting director, Shahin Ali, confirmed this during the open day last Friday.

“Most pressing issues have been on tenancy leases,” he said.

Mr Ali said the commission had always been there to assist the people of Fiji through its legal aid services.

“Disputes tended to arise due to various reasons and each case needed understanding from all relevant parties,” he said.

“Legal aid has also started assisting people relating to civil cases.

“The whole idea about this campaign is to create awareness in the North.

“We give advice to everyone and anyone despite their income or merit status.”

Mr Ali said that legal aid had assisted more than 40,000 people last year alone and the numbers were increasing this year.

Some people in the Northern Division have brought issues such as untimely and lack of tanks or water services.

“We also assisted them in writing to relevant authorities because water is a basic human right,” he said.

“In this way we are actively facilitating the process.”

Mr Ali said Legal Aid Commission staff also attended personally to people at their doorsteps for those who could not make it to their office because of immobility or heath issues.

“In this way, we are able to get recommendations from people on how we can improve our services,” he said.

Among the many fortunate people who made use of the opportunity to benefit from the open day was Emily Tatawaqa, who sought legal advice which in turn helped her sort a few pertinent issues.

“I am glad the legal aid has helped me in those areas,” she said.

Similar workshops and open days will be held in Labasa in the coming weeks.
