Sacrifices Paid Off For Pastry Chef Winner

It was never an easy journey for 32-year-old, Muni Vikash Chetty but his sacrifices have been paid off.

This after he was announced the winner of the Moffat Salon Culinare Pastry chef of the Year award at the Jack’s of Fiji Farm in Legalega in Nadi last Friday night.

His family were present to witness him receive the award.

He acknowledged the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Spa staff and the team for their love and support that enabled him to win the award once again. He grew up in the cane belt area of Navovo, Nadroga and he started his humble career as a kitchen hand at a resort without a qualification.

“I worked for a year without any qualification, I cleaned pots and eating and cooking utensils and the chefs used to encourage me to study at FNU/National Training & Productivity Centre (then Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji).

“So I started as part time student at TPAF in Namaka in 2006.

“I always love cooking. I say hats off to my dad for inspiring me in every way.

He said he always wanted to work in the hotel industry because his father worked in the same industry as a chef and he wanted to be like him.

“My dad once had a sugarcane farm but then he became a steward chef later at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa.

“For me this competition is not about winning or losing but it’s about learning.”

Mr Chetty attended Nadroga Sangam Primary School and continued his secondary at Cuvu College.

He is the eldest in the family and is married with a child.
