Cruise liner Explorer of the Seas berthed at the Suva King’s Wharf on October 20, 2018.

Suva rain failed to deter majorty of the 2320 passengers on board cruiseliner Noordam who walked the streets in their raincoats and umbrellas when it berthed at the Suva King’s Wharf last Wednesday.

Some were even walking in the rain as this was their first experience of such weather in a tropical country.

Local ship agent Kenua Shipping operations manager Madhulesh Lakhan said the vessel arrived on schedule but the weather was not as expected.

“There were 2320 passengers on board, majority braved the rain for tours around the capital city and also to shop for souvenirs and gifts,” Mr Lakhan said.

Tim Dunmyer and his wife Kathryn Dunmyer were part of the majority who braved the wet Suva weather. They have a reason as this trip was part of their 41st wedding anniversary celebration.

The couple are from East Coast of Clemson, South Carolina in the United States.

“I had planned on our 40th anniversary to take my wife to Australia and New Zealand for this special occasion,” Mr Dunmyer said.

“We had wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand but flying was off our list,” he said.

“This was because 22-hours were a bit too long for us to be on air, so we opted for a cruise.

“We went to Vancouver to board the ship; that is how we are here in Fiji.”

This was the couple’s first trip to Fiji. It is a 38-day cruise starting from Vancouver, Pacific including Honolulu, Fiji then to Australia and New Zealand before returning to Vancouver.

“Getting to know new people and visiting new places are the best things about traveling.

The other Fiji stopovers are at Dravuni in Kadavu and then to Lautoka.
