Two Men Sentenced To Four Years In Jail

Two men yesterday were sentenced to four years in jail by the High Court in Suva.

Touvea Taunteang Oten Paerere, 33, and Alipate Vula­gi, 18, appeared before Justice Chamath Morais for their sentencing.

Paerere was convicted and sentenced to two counts each of aggravated burglary and theft.

Vulagi was convicted and sentenced to three counts each of aggravated burglary and theft.

For the first count of aggra­vated burglary and theft, Vul­agi and Paerere in the compa­ny of each other on February 6, 2018 in Navua, entered the property of Rajendra Deo Prasad as trespassers with the intent to commit theft.

On the same day, the duo dishonestly appropriated six cans of Atlas beer, eight cans of bounty rum and cola, four cans of Woodstock, four packets of B&H20 cigarettes, one 26 oz bottle of alcohol, six long neck bottles of Fiji Bitter Beer, all to the total ap­proximate value of $209.83.

For the second count of ag­gravated burglary and theft, Vulagi and Paerere in the company of each other, on February 11, 2018, in Navua, entered into the property of Rajendra Deo Prasad as tres­passers with the intent to commit theft.

On the same day, the duo dishonestly appropriated six B&H 20 packets cigarettes, one carton Bounty Rum (26 oz containing six bottles), one bottle champagne, six bottles 40 oz Black Label whiskey, half carton whiskey contain­ing 12 375ml liquor bottles, two bottles white wine, six bottles of vonu beer, two 2.25 litres sprite, two packets of peanut ruffs, two bottles of rum, one bottle of whiskey, four cans of vonu beer, 10 bottles of whiskey, all to the total approximate value of $1827.45.

For the third count of aggra­vated burglary and theft, Vu­lagi on February 15, 2018 in Navua, the two men entered the property of Rajendra Deo Prasad as trespassers with the intent to commit theft.

On the same day, Vulagi dis­honestly appropriated one bottle 750ml whiskey, four bottles 375ml whiskey, one bottle champagne, one bot­tle passion pop, one bottle bounty rum, one bottle white wine, two big packets of pea­nut ruffs, two 2.25l sprite, one regal dry gin, all to the total approximate value of $344.96.

The two were employed by the complainant at the time of the incidents.

Vulagi was sentenced to four years imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years.

Paerere was sentenced to four years imprisonment.

They were given 30 days to appeal to the Court of Ap­peal.
