SODELPA member Jale Baba yesterday was granted bail by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Baba appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara.

He is charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of making a false statement.

It is alleged that between August 1, 2018 and October 15, 2018, in Suva, Baba made false statements on social media by publishing falsified voter lists and other false information related to the voter lists on Facebook, which he allegedly knew to be false or had no reason to believe to be true.

FICAC Senior State lawyer Francis Puleiwai told the court that the Section 18(A) of the Electoral Act of 2014 which requires the court to act immediately on electoral offence cases, but left it within the court’s discretion.

She also informed the court that first phase disclosures were served to the accused and that the second phase disclosures would be served before the next date so that the plea could be taken.

Defence lawyers Lynda Tabuya and Filimoni Vosarogo represented Baba.

Ms Tabuya sought time from court which was needed to go through the disclosures and that there was no hurry for this case since Baba is not standing in the 2018 General Elections.

Baba was granted bail on a personal bail bond sum of $2000. He was also told not to reoffend or interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses.

He was also ordered not to leave the country, but was granted leave to travel within the country.

The matter was adjourned for plea to November 31.
