Fiji yesterday shared its position on the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) at a symposium hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in Incheon, Korea.

The Fijian Delegation to the symposium is led by Meleti Bainimarama in his capacity as the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development, National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services.

The symposium was attended by nearly 200 participants from 51 developing countries from around the world.

Mr Bainimarama, while delivering his address, highlighted initiatives undertaken by the Fijian Government that are aligned to the SDGs such as the National Development Plan, Green Climate Funded Projects, the Environment and Climate Adaptation Levy (ECAL) and at a Global level the Oceans Pathway Partnership.

Furthermore, he added that Fiji is currently in the process of compiling its Voluntary National Review (VNR) of the SDGs and hopes to have this presented at the high level political forum in New York in July, 2019.

This VNR would show the great progress in the provision of services in many sectors including education, health and infrastructure to name a few.

The principle of leaving no one behind forms the core of the SDGs thus the achievement of the SDGs mandate must ensure the adoption of an inclusive growth approach.

Welfare policies and programmes that include health system, education system and social protection programmes will further contribute to ensuring that no one is left behind.

The forum was being held from Wednesday until today.
