Fashion designer Laisiasa Raibevu Davetawalu is thrilled to have his designs make their international debut in Australia on November 2.

His debut will be at the Bula Ball, a charity event organised by the Fijian Fashion Foundation. It will be held at Darling Harbour, Sydney.

The 21-year-old from Muaninuku in Nabukelevu, Kadavu, with maternal links to Levuka also in Nabukelevu, Kadavu.

“This is my first international debut and I am excited and I’m definitely ready to go through the experiences every known designer has to go through,” he said.

“In Australia, I expect to meet new people, get to understand what the outside world will be like. And most importantly to get inspired.”

He said he fell in love with designing when he showcased his first collection during fashion week in 2015. He also acknowledges one of his mentors, Fiji Fashion Week Managing Director, Ellen Whippy Knight, who he says convinced him that the fashion industry was a good way of making money.

“I’d always been mentored by Ellen Whippy Knight, ever since my first year as a student designer. She taught me not just to be a good designer, but to be a well presented and groomed person as well.

“I have a few people who have also mentored me along the way. I’ve had one of Australia’s well known fashion designers Dion Lee.”

Mr Davetawalu graduated with Certificate III and Certificate IV Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising from the Australia-Pacific Technical College.

He is also the winner of the 2016 Fiji Fashion Week Designer of the Year award.

He departed for the Bula Ball in Sydney yesterday.
