Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber is expecting some of the senior players to soon secure contracts with overseas clubs.

Speaking to SUNsports, Baber said that is why he’s getting in new players while those that are in the team from last season needs to step-up in terms of seniority.

This year winger Eroni Sau has joined French club Perpignan while Olympian forward Jasa Veremalua is expected to join his new club in America.

“These new talents will provide the cover,” Baber said.

“My job here is to see the team right up to the Olympics. I want to see some of these new boys get the much-needed experience before we lose some more senior players to overseas contracts.

“And only the strongest and disciplined ones will be taken to represent Fiji in the 2018/19 leg.

“The reason why I brought the boys to this tournament is to monitor them in their game performance.”

He said with Veremalua’s absence they are looking at Kalione Nasoko, Paula Dranisinukula and Josua Vakurinabili to take charge of the forwards.

Captain Seremaia Tuwai, playmaker Vatemo Ravouvou and Amenoni Nasilasila hold the key in the backline.

“This is a new season which comes with new challenges. This demand for hard work and dedication and they need to maintain their spot in the team.

“I was impressed with the level of competition in the CMFI 7s tournament which really pushed the boys.”

The Fijian men’s 7s team are preparing for the Oceania 7s tournament which will be played on November 9-10 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

They are pooled with Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

The 2018/19 HSBC World Sevens Series gets underway on November 30-December 1 in Dubai.  The Fijians are in Pool C where they take on Kenya, Scotland and France.

Baber said he would expose some more players in the tournaments.
