More than 90 adults and teenagers were part of a community outreach programme from the Suva Fiji Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Fiji Society for the Blind in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

This recent event was part of this month’s Pacific-wide community service effort by members of the church across the South Pacific.

While the adults and youth had worked outside, a number of Latter Day Saints children spent the time in the hostel lounge with the blind students who were reading and doing homework.

One of the volunteers Sheldon Takimoana said: “It’s so cool to see them reading with their fingers and we made new friends”.

In addition, the Braille instructor of the school, Veronica Narayan, also a former student of the school, thanked members of the stake for their service, support and their charity.

“Thank you and your families, and thank you for the lunch. We have a special place in our hearts for you,” she said.

one of the leaders of Suva Stake, Panapasa Ratuvukuvuki, also thanked everyone for their service especially the administrator Barabara Farook and Naomi Tinai “for allowing us to work here”.

The LDS Church members in Manukau, New Zealand was also part of the outreach programme and did this through packing Christmas packs for kids in Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Members of the church throughout Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific had united to serve, beautify and help their local communities.

Some of the other community service projects around the South Pacific include beach, roadside and park clean-ups; as well as gardening and building maintenance for schools and charities.
