FijiFirst general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there is nothing to stop Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) candidate and businessman from buying the now defunct Penang Sugar Mill in Rakiraki.

Mr Shiu Raj has spoken of his plan to buy the defunct mill and rebuild it.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum made the remark while addressing the 200 people who gathered at the Penang Sangam High School in Rakiraki yesterday.

“George Shiu Raj said he wants to buy the Mill, Oh brother, no one is stopping you,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“Go to FSC and buy the thing. Build the mill.

“It won’t cost him any less than $100m to build a modern-day mill.

“All talks no action. Mr Bainimarama talks less, more action.”

He added that from an economic perspective, the Fijian economy had been growing every year for the past nine years.

“This is Fiji’s history,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“Sometime it grows for two years, then negative growth then grow for three years negative and maybe next year it might not grow.

“Furthermore, two other times in our history it grew straight for seven years.

“Once after independence and once in the 1990s, but never grown more than seven years.

“Last year 20,000 new jobs were created and the year before there were 20,000 new jobs created.

“When the economy grows for nine years straight it gives the Government a lot more capacity and ability to do more for the public,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said

“For all policies we implement financially, commercially we give it a thorough study first.

“It takes time.

“We are empowering individuals and do not undermine anybody.

“If you look at our policies we are focused.

“Recognise the reason as to why we have to continue this Government.”
