Beijing’s new international airport which is currently under construction will officially be opened in October, next year.

The airport which has recently being named as ‘Beijing Daxing International Airport’, will be the second largest airport in China located on the border of Beijing and Langfang, in Hebei Province.

This new airport is believed to have a total area of 27.3 square kilometers, with a total investment of about Fj$25.04 billion. A total of 8,000 workers are currently building this mega new airport.

The long-term goal for the new airport is to handle up to 100 million passengers and 4 million tons of cargo each year.

Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), is the company responsible for the construction of the airport main terminal.

Project manager, Li Jianhua, while speaking to a group of foreign journalists said they have completed 80 percent of the airport.

Mr Li said the airport would become the world’s single largest airport terminal upon completion.

“This is a massive international air transport hub capable of handling 100 million passengers annually, and is set to become the world’s largest once it is completed in 2019,” he said.

Mr Li said in the initial phase the airport was designed to handle 45 million passengers with four runways, which would be ready by September 2019.

He added by 2025 Daxing airport will have eight runways and will receive 72 million passengers, with 268 aircraft parking bays, which will be able to accommodate 620,000 flights per year.

Mr Li said the main terminal, which has just been completed, has a built-in glass rooftop for natural illumination, with the ceiling made of interconnected pipes, creating an appealing effect.

The airport he said would be connected to major expressways, an inter-city train, high-speed train stations which will be bound for Xiongan’s New Area in neighboring Hebei province as well as the subway system.

Mr Li also stated a traffic transfer centre would also be built inside the new airport, an aggregation of high-speed railways, subway lines and intercity trains linking to urban areas.

The Beijing Capital International Airport is believed to be the world’s second largest and busiest, handling 95.8 million passengers in 2017.
