Our family did not imagine that this day would come, said Niusita Vunisa.

The 19-year-old shared how grateful her family was after receiving a $4000 cheque under the Family Care Insurance initiative yesterday.

The Fijian Government introduced the initiative for all social welfare recipients, bringing a pack­age of protections that includes life, home, injury insurance and all premiums for this insurance scheme is covered by Government.

“We are exceptionally blessed and fortunate to be part of this, our family did not even dream or imagine that this day would come to us,” Ms Vunisa said.

“Our father left us few weeks ago without telling us.With us is a women, our mother, who has taken it upon herself and be with us through thick and thin.”

Their father Uraia Vunisa, who was a former teacher at Mataso Primary School in Ra, died af­ter a short illness in the past two weeks.

“This blessing is highly appreciated. It will be used to start our family business and, most impor­tantly, help us in our education,” Ms Vunisa said.

Nunia Rakobi of Naitasiri was also grateful after receiving a $4000 cheque. She was the beneficiary of her 63-year-old late mother, Makarini Cagibau, who was a social welfare recipient.

“My mother died last Monday and we did not know about this grant. But I am so thankful to the Government for this initiative. It will enable us to pay our debts that piled up during her funeral.”

Present at the cheque handover were the Perma­nent Secretary for the Ministry of Women, Chil­dren and Poverty Alleviation Josefa Koroivueta, Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Ariff Ali, Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme deputy pro­gramme manager Krishnan Narshman and the FijiCare Management team.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Econ­omy Makereta Konrote said: “With the inclusion of the Fiji Care Insurance, the insurance penetra­tion in the country has increased.”

A total of $24,000 was paid out to nine beneficiar­ies.
