High Court Grants Third Psychiatric Check

The High Court in Suva granted an order yesterday for a third psychiatric report for a 45-year-old man facing rape charges.

Atunaisa Wakana, who is charged with one count of rape, appeared before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe. It is alleged Wakana raped a 13-year-old girl in a church toilet in Lami.

The alleged offence occurred in November 2017, but it was only reported to Police earlier this year.

The court heard the two previous psychiatric reports contained conflicting issues, hence, the State made an application for another evaluation to be carried out by a senior doctor at Saint Giles Hospital. The State counsel told the court that the first report, which was made in November last year, concluded that the accused was fit to take a plea and was aware of his actions at the time of the alleged offence. The second report stated that the accused was not fit to take his plea.

The defence counsel did not object to the request. Wakana has been remanded in custody and the matter has been adjourned
