The MHCC building in Suva is safe to occupy, local authorities have confirmed.

Structural engineers HLK Jacob Limited, the Suva City Council officials and the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Health and Safety unit put the rumours to rest after the inspection was mobilised yesterday. The inspection came after several videos appeared online, suggesting that the structural safety of the building may have been compromised. The director and principal engineer for HLK Jacob Limited, Brian Jacob, said they found no structural distress on the building, but they would continue their inspections.

“From what we have seen today there is no danger of collapse. We cannot see any structural distress on the ceiling, beams or the immediate areas where the tiles have popped,” he said.

“It is safe to go inside, and we are trying to collect all the information and get to the bottom of what is going on.”

The CEO for Carpenters Fiji Limited, Daniel Whippy, said the 17-storey tower currently under construction was independent of the MHCC building although the two buildings are joined.

Mr Whippy has assured that the building was safe for public use and they will release a statement for all the tenants.
