Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says plans by some political parties to make tertiary education free were unrealistic.

Speaking at Tailevu North College last night in a FijiFirst campaign, he said only rich countries in Northern Europe which individually had a high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could afford it.

He said some students had approached the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) office requesting for sponsorship to continue their education. However, when he enquired with the TELS office as to why these students were not sponsored, he was told that they had misused the scheme.

“That is happening now when tertiary is being paid for, imagine if it was free,” he said.

“Nobody will appear in the classrooms, whoever wants to go to school will go to school. They will not think about the money being used to fund their education.”

He said a total of $255 million was allocated for the TELS programme in the 2018-2019 budget.
