The National Federation Party has promised to provide free tuition for all first-year degree students in all three local Universities.

This was revealed at the NFP manifesto launch at Vunimono community hall in Nausori last night.

The policy appears to be have been adopted from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s initiative to introduce tuition free for first year university students which will be rolled over to second year and third year students.

Party Leader Biman Prasad also revealed that there would be no Value Added Tax (VAT) for 15 basic food items.

They are: rice, flour, cooking oil, tinned fish, tea, powdered and liquid milk, butter, noodles, potatoes, onion, garlic, canned tuna, locally produced eggs, bread and locally produced frozen chicken.

Additionally, Mr Prasad said NFP would make prescription medicine VAT free as well as kerosene, women’s sanitary products, baby milk formula, baby diapers, toilet paper, soap and imported fruits.

Further, NFP promises to reduce import duty for lamb products, ghee, school shoes, school bags as well as reduce 20 per cent excise duty on locally-produced beer and spirits.

Mr Prasad added that they aim to increase social welfare allowance for the elderly; $100 per month for those aged between 60-65 years old, $200 per month for those between 65-70 years old and $300 per month for Fijians over 70.

“NFP today is a new National Federation Party,” he said.

“It is one of the most representative parties in the country today.

“We are a party for all Fijians in this country.

“We are an inclusive party where decisions are made collectively. We are a democratic party.”

Mr Prasad said he was proud and humbled by the excellent team that NFP had assembled for this year’s election.

Hundreds converged at the Vunimono community hall last night for the NFP manifesto launch.
