People should read the thesis written by the Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to understand what the Sunset Clause means, says FijiFirst Party leader and Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mr Bainimarama made the plea on Wednesday night during a FijiFirst rally after a woman asked him to explain what the clause meant.

He told them the sunset clause was a thesis written by the A-G while studying in Hong Kong.

“In his thesis he talks about the sunset clause, about indigenous people, but he is not talking about indigenous Fijian people, he talks about indigenous people in all countries,” Mr Bainimarama explained.

“But those who are explaining to you about the sunset clause should read the whole thesis so that they know the meaning of what he is saying.

“He is saying that in all governments, if its indigenous people are not protected than the country will be in ruins. That is the meaning of the sunset clause that he is saying. Then he says that everything that will lead to that ruin should be done away with.”

Mr Bainimarama said a political party was claiming that everything that concerned the iTaukei should be trampled on.

“Who has ever trampled on things concerning iTaukei? What are some of the things about us iTaukei that has been trampled upon?” he asked.

“Our land that is being said to have been lost is intact.”

Residents were told that other people explaining about the sunset clause to them had not fully read Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s thesis thus had not explained the sunset clause in full.
