There was confusion among SODELPA’s rank and file yesterday about Sitiveni Rabuka’s position on his votes if he is ruled out of the November 14 General Election.

Pre-polling begins tomorrow and his fate will be decided two days before the main polling starts on November 14.

A Facebook post, which appeared to have been copied from Mr Rabuka’s official page, said while he was confident about his case, those who weren’t could vote for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the SODELPA president. Ratu Naiqama has been touted to replace Mr Rabuka as leader if he relinquishes the leadership reins.

The post was later taken down. The reason was not known, but it is understood it was not consistent with what Mr Rabuka has said on the camopaign trail.

Mr Rabuka reiterated to voters in Lautoka during a SODELPA rally that they should go for the best candidates. He said all 51 SODELPA candidates were excellent candidates. There was no mention about giving his votes to Ratu Naiqama.

Concern has been raised in some SODELPA quarters why Ratu Naiqama’s name keeps resurfacing as the likely person to succeed Mr Rabuka as party leader.

It is understood some in the senior ranks strongly feel that the selection of a deputy leader and leader should follow the democratic process.

It has been suggested that there are other suitable candidates apart from Ratu Naiqama. They include former MP Viliame Gavoka and Opposition leader Ro Teimumu Kepa.

Two days before the country goes to the poll, Chief Justice Anthony Gates will rule on an appeal by FICAC (Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption) against the acquittal of Mr Rabuka in the Magistrates Court. He was charged in connection with his declaration of his assets and liabilities under the Political Parties Act.
