POLITICIANS AND ELECTIONS

As Fiji gets into the swing of the 2018 General Election, BTL is reminded of a comment by former Cabinet minister and Speaker of Parliament Militoni Leweniqila in the lead up to the 2014 General Election.

Said Mr Leweniqila as a final thought: “Politicians should be like wine, the older the wine is, the tastier it becomes. These young ones are like draught beer, full of froth and impossible to get drunk on.”

NEUTRALITY A POLL ISSUE

Can village headmen (turaga ni koro) be party agents?

BTL has been reliably informed that some village headmen are now party agents.

Surely, they should be neutral because they would be involved in organising polling in their villages.

DEAD ITAUKEI STILL IN VKB

Some iTaukei people long dead still have not had their names removed from the register of iTaukei landowners (Vola ni Kawa Bula – VKB), which means they’re still alive interms of VKB benefits.

However, a clean-up is now in progress as members of various mataqali are registered and those who have died have their names deleted, so that they all get access to lease monies … thanks to the equal lease money distribution policy.

Only those registered in the VKB can receive his or her share.

SUPPORT FOR POLICY ON THE ELDERLY

The success of the FijiFirst party’s policies on the elderly is responsible for a big swing towards the party in urban areas.

Such was the assurance given to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama after a successful campaign at Nabua Village at Three Miles Suva.

Voters assured the Prime Minister they would vote for him so that he can continue his strong leadership.

Most of the elders at the meeting voted for SODELPA in 2014, but they have switched sides after seeing FijiFirst policies for the elderly.
